Common Eye Emergencies We Treat
Some commonly experienced eye emergencies include chemical contact, scratches to the eye (corneal abrasions), and a foreign body in the eye. Knowing how to respond to different emergencies can help reduce the risk of further damage and preserve your vision.
Follow these steps in the case of an emergency, then proceed directly to receive medical attention.
Commonly used chemicals at home or at work, such as cleaning products, can cause serious problems if they come in contact with your eyes. If contact occurs:
- Wash your hands thoroughly
- Flush the eye. Turn your head so the affected eye is down and to the side. Then, hold the eyelid open and flush the eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes, even if irritation improves in less time.
- Seek medical attention
A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the cornea (the front surface of the eye). In the case of a corneal abrasion:
- Avoid rubbing the eye
- Cover the eye gently (do not apply pressure)
- Seek medical care
We will evaluate the injury and may place a contact lens bandage to support healing.
Small foreign bodies, such as dust, sand, dirt or sawdust, can get stuck in your eye and cause irritation. In the case of something small stuck in your eye:
- Do not rub the eye, as this can scratch the surface of the eye
- Blink repeatedly to try to remove the object
- Rinse the eye with artificial tears or cool, running water
- Seek professional care if the object cannot be removed or irritation continues
Large foreign objects, such as glass or metal, can severely damage the eye. Do not attempt to remove the object yourself. Seek emergency medical care immediately.
